Data storage on the Internet began to be offered when some entrepreneurs have realized that widespread use of computers in personal life and at work emphasized the importance of data stored on computers for personal and professional development of an optimal life.
Users of computers connected to the Internet have a much easier life in some ways, for example in communication with others. On the other hand ease of communication and exchange of information also led to an extremely high dependence on computers use.
Computer data stored for a person or company has an inestimable value for their owner and their loss would be catastrophic in some circumstances. On the other hand, rapid access to data on your computer has become essential but not everyone can afford or want to walk continuously accompanied by a laptop.
Internet has come up with a solution to these problems. Data from your computer can be stored on the Internet and thus solve both the problem of accidental data loss as well as the rapid accessing them when needed, from any computer connected to the Internet regardless of its geographical location.
Between 1999 and 2000 many entrepreneurs believed that the establishment of companies that provide Internet data storage is a future business with guaranteed profits. Companies offering such services have emerged in large numbers and began a fierce competition for gaining users, a competition that began with the offer of free services. All companies have been forced to support their bids with massive investments in computing and storage required to handle extremely large number of users.
Entrepreneurs intended to win a large part of the market and would later move to paid services. Target was represented in particular by so-called dot-com sites, companies operating exclusively through the Internet. Data storage was accompanied by other useful small business services such as automatic data synchronization with the computer server, etc..
In parallel they hoped to a new way to use the software (programs) namely computer and run Internet applications on the servers of companies providing applications called ASP (Application Service Provider). Merging ASP sites and data storage companies would have led to the establishment of highly profitable companies that would be charged monthly for their services.
Stock market crash of companies specializing in offering Internet services, however, led to dream dissipation for many investors and caused many companies to go bankrupt. A lot of sites that offer data storage have disappeared and others have had to adapt to new environment relinquishing the free offers.
In present the specialized offer of free Internet data storage is extremely low but sometimes is useful.
